Tagua or "Vegetable Ivory" is a seed from some parts of South and Central America. It has the texture and appearance of Ivory and can be carved into unique jewelry and ornate sculptures.

* I love Tagua for a couple of even better reasons:

Because of its similiarity to Ivory, Tagua is replacing the use of Animal Ivory and reducing the use of animal bones and tusks. Unlike Ivory, the Tagua Seed is a renewable resource that does not take a life.

Tagua is worth protecting the forests. The people living in these areas can earn a living and provide for their families by protecting the natural state of its indigenous forests and harvesting Tagua. (Earning more than they would than by clear cutting the forests for farm and grazing land or producing charcoal.)

Tagua (Vegetable Ivory) is a seed harvested from Ivory Palms indigenous to the forests of parts of South and Central America. The seed resembles Ivory when it is dried and can be carved into jewelry, buttons, and sculptural pieces. Unlike Ivory, Tagua is a RENEWABLE RESOURCE that brings hope to the plight of the rainforests and its inhabitants.

Tagua is a NATURAL part of the ecosystem, but it is also an invaluable source of income to the people living in these forests. In fact, it is more economically advantageous for the people to protect these natural ecosystems than to clear-cut the same land for other uses. Just as important Tagua is replacing the use of Animal Ivory and Bone.
